What is Gramping?
“Gramping”, is an Aussie term taking off in the caravan/camping industry; it’s a pretty nifty concept! “Gramping” is grandparents hitting the road with their grandkids! With 12 weeks of school holidays and most parents only getting 4 weeks of annual leave, that leaves a heap of time to figure out childcare.
A survey from back in November-December 2020 found that almost half of grandparents with grandkids up to 13 years old provided some form of childcare at least once a month. Yep, that’s right, some of our wonderful grandparents are taking care of the grandies a fair bit.
Camping is a way of life for Aussies, almost a rite of passage that gets passed down to the next generation. “Gramping”, well, that’s taking babysitting to a whole new level. It’s all about grandma and grandpa going on holiday in their caravan or pitching a tent with the grandies.
“Gramping” is a fantastic chance for grandparents to connect with their grandkids in a super relaxed setting. In this fast-paced world of technology, “Gramping” gives the kids a break from screens and a chance to have some good old-fashioned family fun. Lots of time around the campire, telling stories about parents and their childhood, learning the family history all while enjoying toasting some marshmallows on the campfire and enjoying being out in nature and the outdoors.
“Gramping” is also about passing on wisdom and skills from one generation to the next. You know, all those everyday things that sometimes busy parents don’t have time to teach their kids—stuff like fishing, knot-tying, trailer hitching, tent pitching, campfire lighting, damper cooking, and so much more. Grandparents usually have more time, and it seems the grandies have a special knack for listening to their grandparents. Maybe it’s because they’re not as stressed as parents can sometimes be?
Some of my best childhood memories come from family holidays; especially those with grandparents and extended family. “Gramping” is all about creating those special, lifelong memories. From toasting marshmallows to catching your first fish, from floating down a stream on an inflatable tube to learning to play cribbage, there are endless memories waiting to be made. These moments become the building blocks of family traditions that often get passed down through the generations.
